Where Am I?

Things have been all about baby for the last couple of months. The finished showroom samples have just been hanging in the corner of the studio, waiting for when I’ll have time to get to work again. I hadn’t heard from Bubble since I applied in mid-January. And then, today I got a call from the organizer, saying that my application had gotten “lost” in some technology glitch, that it had resurfaced today, and that they would like me to be part of the show!! Um!!!
My head is still quite foggy from coping with motherhood, can I really get ready for a show in just one month? I have said yes to the organizers, and this means I am plunging, quite literally, back into work. Talk about a very dramatic way to end my maternity leave.
I’ve been so caught up with drawing little clothing designs, figuring out details for the collection, that I’ve only started thinking about the business side of things, like setting up a small business bank account. I’ve opened one up at Washington Mutual, which I am just finding out is getting eaten by Chase. Oh well. Why did I pick WaMu? Simple straightforward account, lots of checks (when will I ever need these?), and really good online banking to keep track of my spending. Forget the fact that the bank rep took me for a ride and tried to make me open a personal account to. I have to get better at putting my foot down and telling people to only give me what I want, and to save their marketing spiel for other people.
Also, I was in the Garment District this afternoon getting a bunch of swatches and I should have brought along a copy of my wholesale certificate (oops, I forgot), and my business card. Yes, a business card, totally forgot that I have to make one to pass out to everyone that I will be meeting and working with. Um hello, time to ask the husband to help me design one!
Marni has made a few pieces of children’s clothing! She has the iddy biddy version of this dress in light purple, a furry bubblegum pink coat, a secretary-style skirt in tweed, the teeny version of this white pleated top, and a greenish-yellow knit cardigan. Adorable! After oggling over the pieces (and of course examining all the colors, materials and details on the adult clothing and accessories), as I walked out the door, I fell on my butt (in slow motion). Thank goodness for the hubby who caught me with one arm and another kind gentleman who helped me by the other, the bun in the oven didn’t even seem to notice.
More color studies, because I just can’t get over how much I love the wardrobe design in Pierrot Le Fou. Red, white, blue, and all those other colors in between.
The accountant helped me get the paperwork completed and now it is official, Half Dot is incorporated. Now that the name is decided on, I can start thinking about logos and labels.
Here they are, a very very rough overview of the collection, in a jumble of colors (these are just muslins, I have yet to get my hands on the final fabrics I will use). I’d like to add a couple more pieces of outerwear, one being a cropped girl cape, and one sharper-looking boy jacket. There are so many details to work on now, starting with flaring the dresses and giving the boys’ shirt a slimmer silhouette (think Steven Alan).
My fabrics arrived and they are rather atrocious. Nothing matches, and I don’t like a single one of them. I don’t think I was in the right state of mind when I was choosing them. I’ve taped these pictures up on the wall to remind myself of the color scheme I’m trying to go for, lest I keep deviating.
I’d like to make a few pieces of outerwear for the collection. I’ve come up with a very rough prototype for a toddler girls’ swing cape. I wonder, if I were tiny, would I wear this?
