westward

A week in San Jose with family and friends, and revisiting old favorite walks with our little son (in Half Dot, of course).

further uptown

At the Museum of the City of New York, we managed to catch the Eero Saarinen exhibit before it closed. And one floor above, a collection of pieces from MoMA’s Low Cost Furniture Competition with a chair by Saarinen and Charles Eames. Ah yes, their much coveted designs really weren’t supposed to cost as much as they do now.

our city kid

Waiting for his dad inside Bergen Street Comics before we head over to Brooklyn Larder to get some incredibly delicious baked goods.

places revisited

Central Park, so far away from the rest of New York City on a wintry afternoon. I can’t believe how I hardly ever stepped foot in it back when I’d gone to school right beside it. Glad that I’m learning to appreciate things more now that I’m older.

Some other places that I used to visit, online, that I have come across again:

A whimsical world of cut paper, books and the pages between their covers, and cards I’d love to find in my mailbox.

making things

Working on a couple of new accessories for the Half Dot shop.

Meanwhile, a few things I’ve seen recently ~

Made entirely from discarded materials found on the street,  Benjamin Van Oost’s Favela. The Jealous Curator makes me want to paint. And these wooden dolls. There’s a whole chapter in Todd Oldham’s Kid Made Modern about how to dress up some plain wooden spoons and blocks. An activity I’m looking forward to when mister baby can hold a paintbrush!

they were there all along

We’ve been to the Brooklyn Museum of Art many times but seem to have overlooked the entire fourth floor and its contents. Glad we got off the elevator this time to have a look at the small but quite stunning sampling of contemporary art, and to peek into the windows of restored homes from very old New York.

looking up

Now that we have a toddler in tow and are staying close to home, we’re exploring New York City all over again.

The Municipal Arts Society gives walking tours around different parts of New York City. A chance to learn about the history of the buildings we walk by every day.

We went on the 57th street tour on Christmas Day and just about froze our ears off. And it was totally worth it.

A few of the places online that I often like to stop by: scout holiday for a good dose of high fashion, minor details for designer baby things, lunch to see what my friends are eating, and camilla engman for a glimpse into life as a swedish artist.
